SNS strategy plans

Activities in SNS are directed by a 4-year strategy plan supplemented by annual work programmes.

SNS strategy 2010-2013

The vision of SNS is a well-functioning and versatile forest research co-operation within the Nordic region and neighbouring areas for the mutual benefit of forest research, forest industry, the community at large, and the environment. SNS plays a clear and important role in research co-operation and is an engaged and valued partner. SNS aims to create synergy in Nordic Forest research, promote the development of new research fields and strengthen the region’s role in European co-operation through collaboration with EFI’s (European Forest Institute) regional office, EFINORD. SNS aims to develop its structure and activities to act in the best possible manner to today’s needs. SNS supports research areas, where significant Nordic synergies can be achieved.

Overall, the focus is on sustainable use of the forest, forest protection and management of forests with regard to their economical, economic, social and cultural values. Priorities for this are:

Climate change, including adaptation and the ability of forests to counteract climate changes. The role of forest and forest land in the carbon balance.
Measures to increase biomass production for the replacement of fossil and other non-renewable resources.
Material development and methods for increased and new uses of wood products.
Management of forest and forest land in a way, which preserves and restores biodiversity, and avoids negative impacts on soil and land, including erosion damage.
Damage on forests and forest health, preventive and restorative measures.
The economic, social and cultural significance of forests in society. The forest’s capacity to contribute to the development of coastal and rural areas. Forest management in urban areas.
