SNS supports research related to forestry, forests and other wooded land, the utilisation of wood and other wood products, as well as the non-commercial value of forests. Funding from SNS is seed money and always require additional funding, typically from national sources or other programmes. SNS will give financial support to the following types of research collaboration:

1. Networks. Please note that from 2012 networks will be joint SNS-EFINORD networks, which will be announced in 2011
2. Research projects
3. Virtual centres of Advanced Research (CAR)
4. Preparatory studies for larger projects and preparations for applications to EU framework programmes
