The Swedish Forest Agency has the pleasure of inviting you to the 2nd meeting for the Forestry and Water Network. The meeting will take place in Warsaw 8-10 November.

The meeting will focus on four topics: planning tools, drainage systems, buffer zones and beavers. Four groups are preparing material within each topic, including a short description of the problem, objectives of a potential future project, what activities could be included in such a project and possible funding.

SNS was established in 1972 and has its 40-years anniversary in 2012. SNS will organise a  jubilee-conference on July 3rd 2012 followed by an excursion on July 4^th. The conference takes place at Forest & Landscape, University of Copenhagen in the ‘Festauditorium’.

The aim of the conference is put focus to Nordic forest research, to position SNS in the European and global network, and get scientific and political attention to the research areas.

EFINORD and SNS has received 12 applications for networks in 2012. The applications have a total sum of 600.000 Euro of which app. 50% is self-financing. The total budget for the call is 140.000 Euro. The networks will be evaluated over the summer, and decisions will be made in November 2011, and communicated to all applicants shortly hereafter.

Nordisk kontaktorgan for jordbruksforskning (NKJ) arrangerer en spennende konferanse om biobasert kunnskapsøkonomi i de nordiske landene den 6. juli 2011. Her vil du få muligheten til å treffe andre sentrale aktører for å diskutere fremtidens nordiske jordbruks- og matpolitikk i et europeisk perspektiv. Blant temaene som vil bli tatt opp er:

• Globaliseringens effekter på jordbruks- og matsektoren – nye kunnskapsbehov.

• Behovet for en kunnskapsbasert utvikling innen jordbruks- og matsektoren (alle sektorer), der forskning og innovasjon ses i sammenheng.

• Den europeiske forskningsarenaens økte betydning innen jordbruks- og matsektoren. Hvordan kan Norden bli en tydeligere region innen Europa?

Målet med konferansen er å støtte opp under en felles nordisk forskningsinnsats innen jordbruks- og matområdet. Offisielt program sendes ut etter påske, men vi ber deg allerede nå holde av dagen den 6. juli fra kl 12-17. Konferansen holdes i forbindelse med sommermøtet til de nordiske landenes ministre for fisk, jordbruk, mat og skog (ministermøtet) (7.-8. juli) i Tavastehus, Finland, og vil gjenspeile de viktigste prioriteringene i programmet til Det nordiske Ministerråds finske formannskap.

The Annual Report for SNS 2010 has been approved by the senior officials in EK-FJLS today at a meeting on Åland. The senior officials expressed great satisfaction with the work in SNS. Read the report here (in Danish).

Jan C. Svensson, senior research officer at Formas, is new Swedish member of the SNS-board. Jan Svensson replaces Hans-Örjan Nohrstedt at the SNS board for the rest of 2011. Hans-Örjan Nohrstedt changed position to SLU, where he is appointed Principal Administrative Officer of the Department of Soil and Environment.

The Nordic Forest Research Co-operation Committee –SNS and the North European Regional Office of European Forest Institute – EFINORD – announce a joint call for networks for 2012.

Celebrating Forests for People

The General Assembly of UN recognizes that forests and sustainable forest management can contribute significantly to sustainable development, poverty eradication and the achievement of internationally agreed development goals and emphasizes the need for sustainable management of all types of forests, including fragile forest ecosystems.

Reminder of the call of abstract for the 9th IUFRO International Beech Symposium “Ecology and Silviculture of Beech”. The final date for submitting abstracts has been changed to 15 April 2011. The conference will take place 12-17 September 2011 in Germany.

SNS and EFINORD will launch a joint call for networks in March  2011. Deadline for network applications is 01/06 2011. SNS will also launch calls for projects in March 2011. Deadline for project applications is 01/06 2011. There will be no call for CAR’s in 2011, as four new CARs were approved for 2011-2014.
