This centre had focus on carbon sequestration, water protection and biodiversity.

Environmental research on forest ecosystems had largely concentrated on negative aspects such as the impact of clear-cuts, or air pollution. This CAR instead highlighted benefits – environmental services – that the forests provide.

The CAR was to develop a decision support system that would be accessed on the Internet by forest owners, decision-makers and the public.
